La mosquée bleue, ou mosquée du sultan Ahmet, a été construite dans le style ottoman entre 1609 et 1616, par l'architecte Mehmet Aga, élève du grand Sinan. La silhouette de la mosquée bleue d'Istanbul se caractérise par des coupoles et demies coupoles, et par ses six minarets élancés qui accentuent sa masse imposante et constituent une sorte de défi face à la basilique Sainte Sophie que le sultan Ahmet Ier voulait surpasser.
The Blue Mosque, or Sultan Ahmet Mosque, was built in the 17th century Ottoman style by architect Mehmet Aga, a pupil of the great Minar Sinan. Its silhouette is characterized by cupolas and semi domes, and its six slender minarets that accentuate its imposing mass and constitute a kind of challenge to the Basilica of St. Sophia that the Sultan wanted to surpass.
